When he’s sitting in an examination room with a concussion
patient and parents, Micky Collins, Ph.D., is in his element. The
UPMC SportsMedicine Concussion Program director enjoys – and excels at – breaking down a
complex injury into simple, understandable form.

From 12:30-1:30 p.m. Oct. 22, he will get the chance to do
that with parents, patients and others interested in learning about concussion.
Dr. Collins and fellow neuropsychologist Jonathan French,
Ph.D., who specializes in school accommodations for school-age patients with
concussions, will participate in a live, interactive conversation on the
subject via
WTAE-TV’s Live
Connect series.
“There are a lot of myths and misconceptions about
concussion, and this is a great opportunity to provide the facts, the science
and the knowledge that we’ve found with this injury,” Dr. Collins said. “We’ve
been treating people by the tens of thousands the past several years. Between
that clinical experience and what we’ve learned through nearly 200 published studies since our Concussion
Program opened in 2000, it’s exciting to be able to share reliable, scientific
information with parents, administrators, athletes and more.”
The Concussion Program was the focus of a
WQED-TV
documentary that aired Oct. 10 entitled “Concussions: A New Way of
Thinking.”
